Der Camino del Norte (oder Camino de la Costa) ist der Jakobsweg, der in Irún beginnt und entlang der kantabrischen Küste verläuft. Bis Ribadeo, der ersten galicischen Stadt, folgt der Weg der Küstenlinie (nicht immer in Küstennähe), und ab Ribadeo entfernt sich der Weg von der Küste und führt in Richtung der galicischen Hauptstadt. Der Camino del Norte ist eine der historischen Routen, denen die Pilger des Mittelalters folgten, um das Grab des Apostels zu besuchen, obwohl Historiker darin übereinstimmen, dass er aufgrund der komplizierten Orographie und der geringen Anzahl von Städten, die Gastfreundschaft boten, nie sehr beliebt war.
Heute ist der Nordweg zusammen mit der via de la plata und dem Portugiesischen Weg eine gute Alternative zum Französischen Weg für all jene Pilger, die der Überfüllung und Trivialisierung, unter der dieser Weg in den letzten Jahren gelitten hat, entgehen wollen.
Wie wir bereits erwähnt haben, verläuft die Route in Galicien im Landesinneren. Aber auch in den anderen autonomen Gemeinschaften gibt es lange Strecken, auf denen man das Meer nicht sieht, und ganze Etappen weit weg von der Küste. Wer glaubt, dass der Camino del Norte ein idyllischer Wanderweg ist, der immer in Meeresnähe verläuft, der irrt. Es stimmt, dass es Abschnitte gibt, die der gleichen Küstenlinie folgen und sehr schön sind, mit fantastischen Stränden und steilen Klippen, aber es sind die wenigsten. Auf jeden Fall ist das plötzliche Auftauchen des Kantabrischen Meeres nach stundenlangem Wandern im Landesinneren, bei dem man nicht mehr daran denkt, dass das Meer direkt neben einem liegt, ein großartiges Geschenk.
Die Route im Baskenland ist außergewöhnlich, sowohl was die Wege als auch die Landschaften und Städte betrifft. Und die Beschilderung ist hervorragend. Die Strecke ist fast durchgängig bergig, in der Provinz Guipúzcoa mehr als in der Provinz Vizcaya, und es sind bis zu 10 Gebirgszüge zwischen 300 und 500 Metern Höhe zu überwinden. Die Landschaft besteht im Wesentlichen aus grünen und feuchten Tälern, ausgedehnten Wäldern, zahlreichen Bächen, Bauernhöfen, die der Viehzucht dienen, dem rauen Profil der Küste und kleinen Dörfern. In Guipúzcoa kommen wir durch charmante Fischerdörfer wie Pasajes de San Juan, einladende Touristenorte wie Zarautz und natürlich eine der schönsten Städte Spaniens: San Sebastián. In Vizcaya sind die Stadt Gernika und natürlich die Stadt Bilbao erwähnenswert, das Herz der Metropolregion, in der fast die Hälfte der Bevölkerung des Baskenlandes lebt.
Die Route durch Kantabrien verläuft größtenteils auf geteerten Straßen und Wegen. In mehreren Etappen haben wir als Bezugspunkt die Nationalstraße N-634, auf deren Seitenstreifen wir laufen müssen, die aber zum Glück seit der Eröffnung der Autobahn A-8 wenig befahren ist. In einigen Abschnitten gibt es ausgeschilderte Alternativen, die den Asphalt umgehen, allerdings um den Preis, dass sich die Kilometerzahl erheblich erhöht. Zu den positiven Aspekten der Strecke durch Kantabrien gehören einige idyllische Täler wie die von Liendo und Güemes, reizvolle Strände wie Berria, interessante Städte wie Castro Urdiales und Santillana del Mar sowie ein Besuch der noblen Hauptstadt Santander. Als negative Aspekte sind neben dem Übermaß an Asphalt die ausgedehnten Wohnsiedlungen, die Industriegebiete von Santander und Polanco, die überwältigende Dominanz der Eukalyptuswälder und die manchmal ungenaue Beschilderung zu nennen.
Die Strecke durch Asturien ist bergiger und ländlicher als in Kantabrien. Sie ist auch steiler, wenn auch nicht so steil wie im Baskenland. In Asturien gibt es auch viele Eukalyptuswälder, die für die Papierherstellung genutzt werden. Es gibt noch viele asphaltierte Strecken, wobei die Nationalstraße N-634 als Referenz dient, die sich jedoch mit unbefestigten Wegen und Pfaden abwechselt. Einige kleine Dörfer haben eine ausgedehnte, verstreute und anarchische Siedlungsstruktur, die es schwierig macht, ihre Grenzen zu bestimmen. Es gibt aber auch schöne und einladende Küstenstädte wie Llanes, Ribadesella und Luarca und andere, überraschend interessante Orte wie Avilés. Allerdings müssen wir auf der kurzen Etappe zwischen Gijón und Avilés zwei wichtige Industriegebiete durchqueren. Was die Beschilderung angeht, so ist sie in den meisten Abschnitten korrekt, aber an einigen Stellen, wie am Monte Areo (10 km hinter Gijón) und auch zwischen Luarca und Villapedre, ist sie etwas verwirrend.
Sobald wir Galicien erreichen, verlässt der Jakobsweg ab Ribadeo die Küste und führt in südöstlicher Richtung ins Landesinnere von Lugo. Wir kehren auf die bergige Strecke zurück, die mit ihren starken Steigungen an das baskische Gebirge erinnert, das wir vor einigen Tagen verlassen haben. Allerdings nur auf den ersten beiden Etappen. Das galicische Gebiet ist dünn besiedelt, und die Wirtschaftstätigkeit ist im Wesentlichen auf die Viehzucht ausgerichtet. In Gontán, 50 km von Ribadeo entfernt, erreichen wir die innere Hochebene von Lugo, ein Hochplateau, das zwischen 600 und 700 m über dem Meeresspiegel liegt, in der Region A Terra Chá. Hier sind die Steigungen deutlich geringer, und die Route führt durch eine endlose Reihe kleiner Gemeinden in einer völlig ländlichen Umgebung. Was die kulturellen Aspekte des galicischen Abschnitts betrifft, so sind das Dorf Lourenzá mit dem interessanten Kloster San Salvador, die Stadt Mondoñedo mit ihrer Kathedrale Santa María und vor allem das außergewöhnliche Kloster Sobrado dos Monxes hervorzuheben.
